A 'ping' is a message sent using a skintenna or interface ring.

Pings are the Uglies equivalent to emails or texts. As long as the user has an interface ring, interface cuff, or skintenna, they can use the city interface to compose, send, and receive messages, called pings, anywhere at any time. They can also be set to give off an alarm to wake up the user.
In Yokohama, pings can be displayed according to face rank with the pings sent from the lowest face ranks at the bottom, and the pings sent from the highest face ranks at the top.
